Blocks and formatting

Every body is built from blocks: a meeting note might hold a heading, a checklist of action items, a table of decisions, and a live query listing the Project’s Tasks. Type / at an empty text position to open the slash menu, then keep typing to filter it.

  • Paragraphs and headings structure ordinary prose.
  • Bulleted, numbered, checklist, and toggle lists support nested items.
  • Quote and callout set material apart from the surrounding text.
  • Code highlights syntax by language. A Mermaid code block also shows a rendered diagram preview.
  • Divider adds a visual break. In presentation mode it also starts a new slide.
  • LaTeX renders mathematical notation.

Lar adds four entries to the slash menu:

Slash itemWhat it does
Link to noteInserts an inline [[wikilink]] to another Object.
Embed noteEmbeds a live block from another Object.
QueryInserts a live query block with filter, sort, group-by, and results.
Convert to object…Turns the current block into a new Object of the Object Type you pick.

See Links and transclusion for when to use a link, an embed, or a block reference.

A table block holds simple rows and columns. Once a table has at least one data row, its block action menu offers Turn into Object Type: Lar infers a new Type from the columns and creates one Object per row. Review the inferred property kinds before you rely on the new schema.

  • Image and Attachment blocks store the file with the body, so it syncs with the Object.
  • Bookmark creates a link-preview card.
  • Embed blocks show content from services such as YouTube, Figma, Loom, and GitHub.

Bookmark and embed blocks are off by default. To use them, turn on Allow network-capable blocks in Settings → Editor; they also need your device to be online. When on, these blocks fetch previews from their providers and through a third-party proxy. Leave the setting off if you don’t want pasted URLs and remote images to reach those services.

If a file deserves its own properties, backlinks, and viewer, create a file-backed Object instead of an inline block. See Files and media.

Slash-menu results depend on the current selection and parent block. Lar omits blocks that would create invalid nesting. Bookmark and embed blocks also stay hidden while network-capable blocks are off or you’re offline. If a block you expect is missing, try again from an empty top-level paragraph.

To change a block’s style, move it, or split the page into columns, see Format and rearrange blocks.
