Sharing an Object

Share your reading notes on one Book with a friend and edit them together, without exposing the rest of your workspace. Private sharing gives another Lar account ongoing access to a single Object, and later changes keep syncing both ways.

Note

Sharing and redeeming invites work in the desktop app. The browser and mobile apps cannot share an Object. Everything sent through a share is end-to-end encrypted, and the relay never sees your content.

Before you start

Both you and the person you’re sharing with need to:

1. In Settings → Sync, choose Cloud or Self-hosted server and choose Save. See Configure sync.
2. Sign in under Settings → Account.
3. In the Sharing group of Settings → Sync, choose Register device so the account can be found on the relay.

Then ask the recipient for their Your account id, a 64-character ID they can copy from the same Sharing group.

Invite someone

1. Open the Book, then choose Share in its header or Share… in its ⋯ menu. (Once an Object is shared, the header button reads Shared.) The Share object dialog opens on the People tab.
2. Paste the recipient’s account ID into Account ID. People you’ve shared with before appear as suggestions.
3. Choose an access level:
   • Can edit (the default) — can view and edit the Object.
   • Can view — can view it but not change it.
   • Admin — can edit it and manage who has access.
   • Guest — the most limited access: view only.
4. Choose Grant. An invite appears; choose Copy invite.
5. Send the invite through a channel you trust.

If Lar says the account has not registered a device on this relay yet, ask the recipient to choose Register device, then grant again.

Redeem an invite

1. Open Shared and choose Redeem an invite. You can also use Redeem an invite in Settings → Sync.
2. Paste the Invite token (it starts with lar-share:) and choose Redeem.
3. If the invite uses a different relay than yours, Lar asks before switching. Continue only if you trust the sender.

The Object then joins your workspace and appears under Shared → Shared with me.

What is included

The Object’s properties, relations, comments, and body are shared, each as its own encrypted document, together with the definition of its Object Type. Related Objects are not shared automatically: a recipient can see that your Book links to an Author, but can’t open the Author unless you share it too.

Collaborate live

While you are both connected, you see each other’s presence and cursors, encrypted like the content. Cursor and presence data is temporary and never saved.

Change or remove access

In the Object’s Share dialog, the Members list shows the owner and everyone with access.

• To change someone’s access, pick a new level in the menu next to their name.
• To remove someone, choose Revoke next to their name and confirm Revoke access?. They stop receiving new edits immediately, and later updates use new keys they cannot decrypt.

To remove everyone at once, open Shared → Shared by me and choose Stop sharing next to the Object.

Caution

Revoking access or stopping sharing cannot erase what already reached someone’s device, or copies they made.

Find your shared Objects

The Shared page has three tabs:

• Shared with me — Objects other accounts shared with you in this workspace.
• Shared by me — Objects you share, with Manage access and Stop sharing.
• Published by me — web publications you created.

These lists sync end-to-end encrypted between devices on the same account. A device that was offline shows its last known state and catches up once workspace sync reconnects. To open a shared Object on another of your devices, that device must first receive it through workspace sync.

Share or publish?

Use People when recipients have Lar accounts and should get ongoing updates to one Object. Use Publish to web for a read-only snapshot anyone with the link can open. See Publish to the web. If a whole group should jointly own an entire workspace instead of one Object, see Shared workspaces.
